Nichols overtime winner caps off Union comeback against Robert Morris

Box Score

Schenectady, N.Y. Junior Elise Nichols (Pittsfield, MA) scored a power play goal with 2:57 left in overtime to cap off a dramatic 3-2 come-from-behind win over Robert Morris at Messa Rink. The Dutchwomen came back from a two-goal deficit in the third period to tie the score and force overtime for the second straight game. Union (3-13-1) is now unbeaten at home in its last four games and snapped an eight-game winless streak to close out the series with the Colonials. Nichols had two points on the day to extend her streak to four games.

Robert Morris jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Morgan Beikirch scored her third goal of the season 53 seconds into the game. She picked up a loose puck in front of the Union goal and beat goaltender Alex Zirbel (Clearwater, FL) on the right side.

Union threatened to tie the game in the first period but could not capitalize with the equalizer. Freshman Dale Chaput (Burlington, ONT) sent in a shot from the right face-off circle at 10:43 but Robert Morris goaltender Brianne McLaughlin snagged the puck out of the air. Freshman Suzy Pocock (Sterling Heights, MI) also had a chance from the right side but was denied at 17:23.

Kathryn Traynor made it a two-goal advantage in the second with a short-handed goal at 1:47. Robert Morris had the puck in Union's zone just as a Dutchwomen penalty expired to put them on the power play. Traynor took a pass from Ashley Barnett and finished in front on the right side.

Union continued to battle in the third period and came back to tie the game with two even-strength goals. Linnea Edwarson (Duluth, MN) got things going with her fourth goal of the season at 1:18 to make it 2-1. McLaughlin stopped two straight shots but could not hang on to the puck as Edwardson skated in to convert on the rebound. Nichols assisted on the play with the second shot.

Meghan O'Connor (Portsmouth, RI) scored her second goal of the season later in the period to tie the game at 16:39. O'Connor took a pass at the point from Kelly Lannan (Winchester, MA) and sniped a shot over McLaughlin's right shoulder.

With time winding down in regulation Robert Morris put together one last rush. Megan Picnic skated into the Union zone and fired a slap shot on net but Zirbel was there to glove it wide and force overtime.

Union held Robert Morris without a shot on goal in the extra session while putting up three of its own. The third time was a charm to end the game at 2:03. O'Connor dug the puck out from behind the Robert Morris net and found Nichols at the left post. Nichols received the pass and without hesitation flipped the puck inside the left post past McLaughlin.

Union outshot Robert Morris 31-20 in the game. Zirbel made 18 saves for her third win of the season. McLaughlin stopped 28 shots in the loss.

The Dutchwomen return to ECACHL action at home next weekend as they host Brown in a two-game set beginning on Friday, January 20 at 7:00 p.m.
